Learning objectives:

Better understanding of problems that, if not ours, might as well be.

Necessary Materials:

  • Piece of paper;
  • Pen

Description of the activity:

  1. Each participant must write on a blank piece of paper some difficulty that they encounter in interpersonal relationships and would not want to orally expose in any semi-public environment.
  2. The coordinator of the dynamic collects the papers and mixes them up.
  3. After a draw, the papers are taken by the dynamic participants, who assume as their own, the problems written there.
  4. The problem is read aloud and a solution is proposed.
  5. The intention is not to ask questions or to debate.
  6. After all the papers were read and received suggestions for solutions, the coordinator should ask the group questions such as:
    • Did the other understand your problem?
    • How did you feel seeing the problem described?
    • Do you understand each other’s problem?
    • How did you feel about the group?

Thus, everyone has the possibility to put themselves in the other’s place, because better understanding their behaviors and feelings is essential to develop the empathy necessary for group living.
